The Violet Files / Lessons / cassandra grey’s guide to her morning-after dirty french look

Obviously, I always wash my face (and floss my teeth) before I go to bed, but I like to look like I slept in my eyeliner, expensive perfume, and nothing else. Like I just woke up like this in a pied-à-terre in Paris, threw on his button-down shirt that I picked up off the floor before running out to fetch my morning coffee and Pain au chocolat. I like my lipstick to be blurred and my hair to shine like a crazy horse dancer, smelling like the one that got away.

If this is your vibe too, please find my VIOLET CODE APPROVED guide to the morning-after dirty French look (in just 11 steps).

STEP 1.

Start with mine and Hailey Bieber’s choice concealer from our very own Carrie Barber (she used to work on my creative team!) Enjoy the ease of an expert wand and apply to eyelids, under the eye, duh, and to the lower face just above and along the jaw line, and if you want bigger lips, apply as a lipstick primer, and blend with the real beauty blender—please don’t use the dupes— the Beautyblender® Pro Makeup Sponge was created by a woman, a makeup artist, who engineered the perfect applicator and changed the game and then a bunch of thieves in manufacturing copied her. Let’s support our local girl gang.

STEP 2.

Apply messily to upper and lower lashline and use the handy smudge side of the stick to create a warm, smokey base. Don’t overthink it—application in the back of a taxi or powder room is encouraged. The subtle depth this khol provides is foundational to achieving the slept-in / loved-in look (and if you do end up finding yourself occupied with more interesting things than removing your eyeliner before you fall asleep, you can thank Jillian for ensuring this creamy pencil is plant-derived and organic. Only the best will do!)

STEP 3.

DO NOT MISS THIS STEP! Yes, it’s critical. And don’t even ask, yes, it has to be Noir Rouge. J’adore l'aubergine! C’est sexy. Leave it to Chanel to perfect the liquid liner for the dirty French cat-eye. With a simple flick, she’s a one-stroke wonder! If you have ever been that girl who claims she just can’t do liquid liner, this one’s for you.

STEP 4.

Guys, you know I can’t lie to my Close Friends. I get full false eyelash extensions. Religiously. You can sleep in them. On the 23rd day mark, like clockwork. I see Wende at Whitney in the City in Manhattan, and Jimmy or Daniel, known as the identical twin eyelash kings in Los Angeles. But, I did take a break for some time in 2019 due to an inconvenient worldwide pandemic. Drew Elliot, who was MAC’s Creative Director at the time, introduced me to a new mascara innovation he was working on, and it is legit nearly as effective as falsies, and therefore this is the mascara I recommend.

Ms. Beckham understands the power of a strong brow. Whether you prefer to go bold or soft, just a few flicks of VBB’s foolproof baby blade pencil add fullness and definition. I don’t make the rules.

STEP 6.

Moving to the lips, you guessed it, we are smudging and contouring yet again with Fara Homidi’s effortless Smudge and Contour Lip Pencil. I witnessed a tip on set that changed my life forever: hug your lip pencil directly under your lower lash line for a warm smoky eye. This is an essential step in achieving those Bette Davis eyes. I use a color 2-3x shades darker than my lip color and blur the lines of the entire lip and glide straight across the cupid’s bow, filling it in for the pout Lily Rose Depp made famous.

This is the perfect matte texture for that just-kissed (the French kind of kissing) look. This color is more Capri or Palm Beach than Paris, but somehow it feels right.

"Instagram vs. Reality" no more thanks to these blurring complexion drops from Gucci (another slay, queen). Literally the Pretty Filter IRL. Make sure to blend with the Chanel foundation blending brush for a seamless finish. An elite combo. Tip: You only need two small drops.

Not your Basic B bronzer powder, this JUST APPROVED product drop converted me into a bronzer addict, like I am applying it 2-3 times a day. The revolutionary cream-meets-powder formula gives you a naturally luminous glow like you took an afternoon nap in the Mediterranean sun. I also love the way the compact looks on my beach towel.

STEP. 10

A few dabs of Jillian Dempsey’s Cheek Tint in Scarlet, of course, for that post-make-out-sesh flush, applied on the cheekbone, tapping upwards. If my décolleté is exposed, I always press a little in the center of my chest—a pro makeup artist tip to mimic your natural rosiness. This trick gives you life (and sex appeal) from within.

There is simply no way to complete the morning-after dirty French look without the strip-tease shine hair perfume by Madame Grey. People are calling it spray-on sex appeal. Seriously, if you can’t be bothered with the first 10 steps, this step is the ONLY ONE YOU CAN'T SKIP to achieve this look. Be careful out there.
