RE: The origin story of the infinitely chic and highly covetable Le Labo Santal 26 Candle for VIOLET GREY
APRIL 24TH, 2023
In a true Hollywood moment, I first discovered Le Labo’s Santal 26 scent when my late husband and I were attending the housewarming party of the one and only Jenny from the Block. The mansion, hidden in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, sitting on what felt like Central Park was all that one might expect—crystal chandeliers, champagne velvet sofas, silk carpets, dozens of tightly arranged white roses, and what appeared to be silver leafing on every available surface. The scent in the house was the thing, though; perfect, warm, welcoming. I inquired, and Marc, her husband at the time, said, “Oh, Jennifer had the scent custom-made for the house,” and pointed me in the direction of the oversized French regency coffee table where over fifty candles were burning. On the candle, it read in handwriting, "MADE FOR JENNIFER LOPEZ.” I thought that was just about the most glamorous thing I’d ever seen.
A discovery like this is what I live for. I hunt for glamour like it's my job because, well, it is my job. By Monday morning, I had Le Labo’s founders on the phone in Paris, dropped JLo’s name, and convinced them to make a candle for our little shop on Melrose Place. I explained to them that we have the most discerning customers in the world, and they would absolutely love their candles.
The infinitely chic Le Labo Santal 26 Classic Candle for VIOLET GREY became an instant bestseller, and while gone for a time, it’s back again. No guarantees that it’ll stay that way for long, though.
