VIOLET GREY profiles female beauty entrepreneurs who are considered industry game changers for their individual approach to business. Each one entered the conversation in her own manner and maintained a steady, if not unparalleled, trajectory with her indomitable spirit.

When Danish makeup artist Kirsten Kjær Weis saw that the models in her chair were experiencing skin problems as a result of using conventional cosmetics, she set out to remedy their issues. The result is Kjær Weis, an organic line of makeup that took seven years to develop before its launch in 2010.

“I didn’t have any natural products in my kit because the performance wasn’t up to par with traditional brands,” she says. “My goal was to merge the two worlds of high-performance luxury and a nonsynthetic ingredient list.” Kjær Weis cosmetics contain no red-flag elements such as phthalates, propylene glycol, parabens, or petrolatum. “Initially, it was important to me that the line was nonsynthetic and all-natural. However, as we progressed with formulating, it turned out that we would be able to do it all organically,” she explains. “Natural is fantastic, but organic is even better.”

Befitting a professional makeup artist, Kjær Weis blushes and shadows don’t sacrifice performance for a crunchy pedigree. The Cream Foundation has become a hero item for the way it creates a flawless finish on any skin type—thanks to its buildable formulation, which can be used as a tinted moisturizer or a concealer-like coverage, depending on application technique and desired affect. Little wonder it has made its way into the makeup bags of eco-conscious celebrities like Emma Watson, who favors not only the foundation, but also the Radiance Highlighter and Mascara. The entire range comes packaged in weighty, elegant silver cases that are refillable. “It was extremely important to me that the line be environmentally friendly,” Kjær Weis says. “I think it’s vital to contribute to less waste wherever anyone can in their lives.”

KIRSTEN BEFORE 10AM

BEDROOM

What is the atmosphere of your bedroom?
My bedroom is very peaceful. It’s soft and pretty and has a muted pastel color scheme that I love. I feel like it’s very soothing to the soul.

Please describe your bed and your favorite thing about it.
I actually need a new bed, so what I love more than anything are my super-soft sheets.

What time do you wake up?
Typically around 6 a.m.

How many hours of sleep do you require?
Seven.

Any bedside beauty essentials?
I love to apply The Beautiful Oil to my face and neck right before bed. My skin looks amazing in the morning, and the fragrance is lovely to fall asleep to.

BODY

Do you drink coffee or tea, eat breakfast?
I have a cup of coffee in the morning, and a couple of hours later I’ll have some green juice. I’m not much of a breakfast person.

Do you work out in the a.m.?
I try to work out around four times a week in the morning.

BEAUTY

What is your morning skincare regimen?
I love to place a warm facecloth on my skin first thing in the morning. It wakes me up and also feels really soothing. I always follow up with oils, both for the face and body.

What makeup and products do you use on a daily basis?
I use our Cream Foundation, Dazzling Bronzer, a lip product, and a little eye makeup. Always an eyelash curler and mascara, and sometimes I will add our Wisdom Eye Shadow for definition. I like a very natural yet enhanced look.

What’s your hair situation in the a.m.?
I kind of like my hair in the morning. I’ll typically just comb it through with my fingers with a little oil and wax.

BUSINESS

What’s the first thing you read each morning?
Emails and Instagram. Those are always the first things I reach for.

What business do you conduct before 10:00 a.m.?
I do a lot before 10 because I deal with Europe.

What time do you head to your office?
Around 10 a.m. every day.
