“It was really about not falling over,” says Los Angeles native Jane Moseley of her recent runway debut for Balenciaga. An artist first (she’s a painter and sculptor), 29-year-old Moseley wears her modeling career like a loose garment, not unlike her habitual slouchy hoodie. Her Hollywood story involves growing up with a horror movie star dad, and moving to New York for the better part of a decade before returning to LA last year. Moseley cites the outdoorsy lifestyle as one of her hometown’s main draws—unsurprisingly, she says she’s happiest when acting as “mom” to her ten animals. And those tattoos (she has somewhere between 20 and 30)? “I don’t get sentimental with them,” Moseley explains. “I think tattoos are meant to be a bit stupid.”

Current neighborhood?
Burbank. We live by the Equestrian Center, so a lot of the houses have suburban vibes, but in the backyards there are stables and people ride their horses down the street. It’s where Tim Burton grew up, so it has a very Edward Scissorhands feel. On Magnolia Street there are a ton of alternative stores; it’s a big hub of hot-rod culture and lowbrow art.
Best thing about living in LA?
Being able to live well and have access to nature—mountains, ocean, desert—and yet also being able to participate culturally. There’s a lot more going on in art and fashion than there has been for a while.
Hail the kale or In-N-Out?
In between, although I’m trying to stop eating meat. I never thought I’d be that person, but I have so many pets that I feel like if I can’t kill it myself then I have no business eating it. But I do love In-N-Out.
What’s your LA hidden gem?
I love going to Angeles National Forest. It’s massive and in a mountain range, and it feels like it could be anywhere.
Beauty essential?
I’m trying to do sunscreen. I really love the Avène products— they’re light, which I need because I have sensitive skin.
What’s the first thing you do in the morning?
Drink coffee. My boyfriend usually wakes up before me and is trained so that when he makes himself a coffee, I get one too.
Necessary indulgence?
The Walking Dead is something I’ve been indulging in excessively, and I’m sadly addicted to Instagram. If we’re talking food, I recommend the banana cream pie from The Apple Pan.
Which LA artists inspire you?
Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy are my heroes.
Earliest LA memory?
I used to go to Pan Pacific Park to play before the Grove ever existed. They had this wooden playground where I would always get splinters and there was this rope bridge—my dad called it the shaky bridge. I remember it vividly.
