HERO WORSHIP: BARRIER ENHANCING MILKY ESSENCE

When the veteran dermatologist Dr. Loretta Ciraldo launched her namesake line in 2018, her mission was to create formulas that could help the skin weather an array of environmental assaults. Sunscreen was understandably high on her list, given her Miami-based practice, though she was just as focused on increasing hydration and nourishment for overall resilience. At the start of 2025, as the beauty world considered the value of elaborate, multistep routines, Dr. Ciraldo made a case for a post-cleansing assist, launching the Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence as a VIOLET GREY exclusive. Here’s how the product became an instant best seller.

THE GENESIS

Across four decades as a practicing dermatologist (she recently stepped away from seeing patients), Dr. Ciraldo encountered plenty of “fickle” skin care brands, as she terms it, where the marketing hype didn’t translate to lasting results. “So many patients within my practice couldn’t find products that addressed their problems,” she says. Other times, people would complain about a plateau effect with their regimen, as the benefits seemingly tapered off. Her interest in skin biology, going back to her time in the Harvard labs in the mid-1970s, led her to think about effective absorption—how to deliver valuable ingredients where the skin needed them most. “Could there be one easy way to really rev up that visible improvement?” Dr. Ciraldo recalls wondering. And what kind of formula could simultaneously act on the timeline of instant gratification and long-term skin health? She landed on a product that would follow cleansing and help the complexion better absorb whatever topicals you might layer on next. Its name, Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence, underscored the idea of a lightweight formula with serious chops.

THE FORMULA

To understand how this essence works, it helps to have a mental picture of the skin’s composition. The topmost layer, known as the stratum corneum, is often likened to a brick-and-mortar wall. In this analogy, the mortar is the skin’s lipid matrix, which includes ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. The bricks are dead skin cells, or corneocytes, which “have an ability to grab water,” says Dr. Ciraldo. One of these naturally occurring humectants is glycerin—and when applied to the skin, it’s a hero ingredient that Dr. Ciraldo considers to be “more effective than topical hyaluronic acid.” It’s a key component of the Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence, helping to deliver that immediate feeling of dewy skin. The formula also includes the antioxidant niacinamide, to tamp down redness and protect against irritating pollutants, along with a lipid-rich blend she calls jojoba milk. The final ingredient, ectoin, is known as an “extremolyte”—a class of amino acid derivatives produced by microorganisms in punishing environments, such as salt lakes. “It’s able to maintain a constant healthy hydration level,” says Dr. Ciraldo. Translated to the face, that means juicy, plumped-up skin.

THE MOMENTUM

As soon as the first Committee members began testing the formula, it was clear that the Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence deserved a coveted slot as a VIOLET GREY exclusive. The makeup artist Grace Ahn called it “a literal drink of water for the skin.” The aesthetician Raquel Medina-Cleghorn became a twice-a-day convert: “I’m completely obsessed.” When Allure announced the 2025 Best of Beauty winners, Dr. Loretta’s formula earned the award for Best Essence; according to the magazine’s editors, this was the product to use “if you want your skin to have yoga-ball levels of bounce.” Such industry-wide recognition rocketed the formula to best-seller status, and it’s the kind of skin-saver often in the cart as a recurring order. When people run out, says Dr. Ciraldo, “I hear the feedback: ‘Wow, I see a difference without it.’” The soothing properties make it a recommended product for post-procedure or post-sun use. It’s also popular with a certain constituent in her own household: her husband. “Men seem to love it after shaving,” she reports. “It’s totally non-irritating, and you get that instant glow.”
