How a passion for simplicity and sustainability led the co-founder and CEO of Nécessaire to reinvent the body care category.

Having been born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, signature Scandi minimalism is inherent to Randi Christiansen. Combine that with 15 years experience as an executive at a global skin care giant, and you get how the now LA-based entrepreneur was perfectly primed to co-create clean body care brand Nécessaire [with Nick Axelrod]. Since launching in 2018, the thoughtful collection has quickly gone on to win countless awards and amass a cult following.
“I was lucky to work on the La Mer and Estée Lauder brands with the best people in the industry,” she says. “During that time I fell in love with beauty and wellness. That experience, plus a desire to start a business and make a positive environmental impact ultimately inspired our launch.”
Body products are a dime a dozen, so how did Christiansen set Nécessaire apart? By asking herself several questions during the formulation process: “Is the product necessary? Is the ingredient necessary? Is the footprint necessary? Our name is our discipline,” she explains. “Add to that clean ingredients, effective formulations, and sustainable practices and I continue to be inspired by our products.” Oh, and one other essential element always comes into play: “The way it feels matters. It has to be sexy.”
Here, the mother of three shares her self-care rituals and surprising expensive-but-worth-it item.
First thing you do when you wake up?
I have a great cup of coffee in my favorite robe.
Hours of sleep on the regular?
Five minutes. It’s a fast self-care ritual: cleanse, moisturize, lip balm, done.
Typical skincare regimen?
In the evening, it’s a longer self-care ritual. First, I cleanse with Tatcha Deep Cleanse, followed by Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Acid Serum and virgin cacay oil. Next, a layer of Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Rich, then Nécessaire The Body Lotion from my neck down and end with May Lindstrom The Blue Cocoon on my chest and heart.
Hair situation in the a.m.?
I have fine Scandinavian hair so I usually brush it back and clip it up. I love my Adidas baseball cap!
Your signature beauty look?
The best possible skin. I am lucky if I remember to put on mascara, but I never forget my skin care. I love Chanel lip products, and will occasionally do a colored lip.
Go-to breakfast and a.m. beverage?
Foolproof self-care move?
A hike in the mountains.
The scent of nature.
An expensive-but-worth-it product or treatment?
A facial at the Joanna Vargas Spa—it’s my special treat. And I pay a fortune for my favorite water, which is the ultimate beauty product in my opinion. Best money spent!
Last thing you do before bed?
Kiss my husband.
