“I always start a smoky eye with a blendable liner. You can create definition, and then use less shadow. Line the top and bottom waterlines so they are saturated with pigment. Some of the product will probably come down to the lower lash line, so use Utowa’s pointed 7P brush to blend underneath.”

“Start with the bottom left black matte shade. Use Utowa’s #13 brush to sweep it all across the lid, then start defining the crease of the eye before blending upward for the smoky effect. If you have round eyes, I like to create a cat eye–like point, but if they’re almond-shaped, then I’ll do the opposite, rounding out the corners a bit to balance.”

“Next, take a little of the silver color from the top right of the eyeshadow quad, and layer it in the center of the eye before blending with the black shadow. Go back to the pointed brush and blend more of the same silvery color underneath the eye, right into liner. Curl lashes with Utowa’s curler for a little more oomph before applying two coats of this mascara.”

“Use these individual lashes for extra emphasis. If you have almond-shaped eyes, put one or two in the middle of the lash line. If your eyes are round, stick to the outside edges. While you’re figuring out placement, put a dot of Duo glue on the back of your hand to let it dry a bit and get a little tacky. Then pick up the lashes with Rubis tweezers and dab into the glue before applying.”

“To give cheeks a natural flush, sweep this just-after-sex-esque shade across the apples of the cheeks and up toward the ears.”

“Line lips with Chanel’s Precision Lip Definer in Natural before applying this lipstick straight from the tube. It’s nice to pair a nude lip with a really dramatic eye because it gives a cool balance to the look.”

When questioned on the subject, VIOLET GREY brand ambassador Kira Nasrat has been known to describe her vibe as “gangsta with a Birkin.” The statement is just a taste of the makeup artist’s sweet-but-sassy sense of humor (and style), which has beguiled fans and clients almost as much as her genius with a foundation brush. (Gwyneth Paltrow, Jamie Chung, Margot Robbie, Billie Lourd, and Freida Pinto are just a few of her satisfied customers.)

But for much of Nasrat’s life, although she worked on the business side of the beauty industry, makeup was nothing more than a hobby, albeit one that she was very, very good at. It wasn’t until six years ago, when actress Azita Ghanizada (a close family friend) asked Nasrat to do her makeup for a red carpet event, that Nasrat—who was working as an account executive—realized she could parlay her favorite pastime into a lucrative career, and got serious about the business of beauty.

After joining VIOLET GREY in 2013, Nasrat helped to open and manage the flagship store on Melrose Place, working with VIP customers and growing her celebrity clientele. Now, as VIOLET GREY’s first official brand ambassador, Nasrat does what she does best—charming celebrities, and the world at large, with her winsome smile and unmatched beauty prowess.
