At VIOLET GREY we believe the best editors are makeup artists, so we dug deep into their kits to learn what they can’t live without.
There is no Photoshop or Facetune on the red carpet. What you see is what you get, and the most sought-after makeup artists know the best products for blurring pores, camouflaging dark circles, and banishing pesky blemishes. We asked a slew of our favorite artists from The Violet Code committee to reveal one of their ultimate kit essentials—so you can look your best without an Instagram filter.
A red carpet essential of mine is the Joanna Vargas Euphoria Mask. I keep loads of them in my kit, and I rely on them to help me prep the skin. They are like an instant facial, and they really hydrate and encourage that glow I love so much.
Kirin’s Expert Tip: Use a facial roller (Kirin loves a rose quartz roller for this) right on top of the mask to get all that goodness into the skin, while also stimulating lymphatic drainage.
My absolute essential red carpet product would have to be the Tom Ford Eyeshadow Palette in Nude Dip. It has the perfect mix of champagne, nude, bronze, and pewter shades that are flattering on every skin tone. It can be used as a soft wash of color or built up to create a dramatic, expensive-looking smoky eye. Also, the satin metallic texture delivers a soft-focus luminous finish to the eye without ever looking sparkly or too overdone.
Serge Lutens Comb Mascara is hands down my favorite. It has a tiny comb applicator that helps coat each lash. It’s waterproof, which is key for red carpet events and long nights, and it doesn’t smear or budge no matter the weather. Also, the powerful mascara holds a curl like no other mascara can. Be advised: you must remove it with an oil-based formula.
Before big events I always take the time to prep my clients’ skin with a couple of sheet masks. My favorites are the Joanna Vargas Bright Eye Hydrating Mask and Euphoria Face Mask on top. It’s basically multimasking in full effect to revive the skin. Then I apply the Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream as a fresh base before starting the makeup. Those extra minutes of skincare always make a big difference on the final glow!
The RMS Luminizer X Quad is a must for all makeup artist’s kits. The four shades work well when applied directly on lips, cheeks, eyelids, and the décolletage. It can also be mixed with moisturizer and applied to the chest and shoulders. It has everything you need to instantly glow up a look!
