A good makeup artist’s expertise goes beyond choosing the right foundation shade and devising the perfect smoky eye. By virtue of their intimate rapport with the human face, they also know a thing or two about skin care.
VIOLET GREY asked top artists like Pati Dubroff (whose loyal clients include Charlize Theron and Naomi Watts), Kate Lee (who works regularly with the likes of Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller) and Rachel Goodwin (Emma Stone’s longtime collaborator) to divulge their favorite anti-aging products.

Below, formulas that target everything from fine lines and wrinkles to dryness to loss of elasticity, along with some invaluable tips on how to use them.

“I have very dry and sensitive skin, especially around the eye area, and this mask really makes a difference. Because it goes on clear, I can use it on the plane without getting funny looks.”

“I depend on SK-II’s Cellumination Cream Ex and  Chanel Sublimage Eye Cream every night. I’m also a huge fan of Sisley’s Black Rose Mask; it really hydrates the skin and gives it a glow.”

African Botanics Marula Oil with Neroli has been a lifesaver for my dehydrated, blemish-prone complexion. It also helps to visibly plump the skin and boost radiance. To protect my eyes I religiously wear sunglasses outdoors, even when it’s overcast, since UVA rays can penetrate through the clouds. The skin around our eyes is the thinnest and shows signs of aging first. I’m currently using Tata Harper Restorative Crème, which hydrates, de-puffs, anti-ages and diminishes dark circles.”

“I use Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer every day. I can’t live without it. It evens out my complexion but isn’t too heavy.”

“I like to cleanse with Eve Lom Morning Time Cleanser, exfoliate at least three times per week with Tatcha’s Classic Rice Enzyme Powder and then moisturize. When I’m in a humid climate (like visiting family in Puerto Rico), I use a lighter moisturizer like Sisley’s Ecological Compound. For drier climates like L.A., Creme de La Mer works best. It’s especially healing when I pair it with La Mer’s Regenerating Serum. The best tightening mask ever is by Linda Ross. I do it once a week and you can truly see a difference on my skin.”

“Now that I’m in my 30s I’ve begun to notice expression lines on my forehead and between my brows. I’m not ready for Botox, so I’ve started using RéVive Intensite Volumizing Serum. I tap a drop or two directly onto the lines to plump them out. It’s been six weeks of consistent use and I can definitely see improvement.”

“Between constant travel and this past winter of extreme weather, my skin has never been so parched. To restore luminosity and combat dryness, I do a quick exfoliation followed with a heavy coat of Sisley Express Flower Gel Mask. I let it sit for at least 10 minutes (20 to 30 if I have the time) and then gently press the remainder into my skin. I can immediately see the results: My skin appears moisturized, refreshed and has a visible glow.”

“Chanel’s Foaming Cream Cleanser helps to fade out dark spots, smells delicious and makes a luxurious lather; I use it to take off my makeup at night. For hydrated lips, I love Eve Lom Kiss Mix. Chantecaille Pure Rosewater is an old-school favorite for at the side of my bed. I love the smell of roses at night.”

“Révive includes Nobel Prize-winning ingredients in their skin care, so I tend to trust them. I particularly love the Moisturizing Renewal Cream. It feels amazing and really shows results. My skin looks fresher and firmer and has a nice glow to it.

“Caudalie Premier Cru Elixir is a serum and dry oil at the same time, so it’s not greasy at all. I started using it a year ago and I really see the difference. I apply it before my daily cream moisturizer to firm, smooth and brighten my skin. I also use a few drops on my neck and chest to prevent wrinkles.” .

“I started using the SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 Night Cream about eight years ago, and I swear by it. I am convinced that — combined with the Kinara Lactic Acid Hydrating Serum — it has kept the years off. I am turning 44 in a few days and no one believes me. That’s proof enough for me.”

“For a supercharged overnight treatment, I apply La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask. For balanced hydration during the day, I use New York facialist Joanna Vargas’ Rejuvenating Serum. I've also recently been using Biologique Recherche Lotion P50. I tap it onto the skin before moisturizing and I see immediate tightening results. It really is a miracle lotion.”
