Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is not just one of our favorite frequent fliers and multitaskers; she is also one of the most paparazzi’d travelers of our time. In her column for The Violet Files, the globe-trotting model, actress, and lingerie/perfume designer shares her travel itinerary, her packing essentials, and the elements of her best-dressed-list-making travel looks. Next stop: New York City, where Huntington-Whiteley will be attending the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Benefit, better known as the Met Gala.
PAPPED: LAX Airport | Los Angeles
DESTINATION: JFK Airport | New York City
REASON FOR TRAVEL: Work and play! I’m attending The Met Gala and shooting an exciting ad campaign.
HOTEL: The Mark
In my carry-on: My iPhone and Macbook Air, a cashmere sweater from Malo, and Rosie for Autograph cotton bottoms to change into on the plane. I also packed a pair of my favorite socks, which actually belong to my fiancé!
Seatmate: I ended up next to the wonderful Kate Hudson and her lovely stylist, Sophie Lopez. We had a catch-up and a giggle together, as this isn’t the first time we have bumped into each other on a flight! We chatted about Kate’s super successful athleticwear company, Fabletics, as well as our favorite travel and hotel destinations. And we had a competition of who could drink the most water!
Peanuts or pretzels: I’m fasting on this flight and just having water (hence the water-drinking competition!). This helps me with jet lag and general well-being once I land at my destination.
Entertainment plan: In between catching up with Kate, I replied to emails for upcoming work commitments and reviewed designs for spring/summer ’17 Rosie for Autograph lingerie and sleepwear. While I worked I listened to my current favorite album, “Twenty88” by Big Sean and Jhene Aiko. I also read a little of Untethered Soul, by Michael A. Singer, which is a spiritual book about our relationship with our inner thoughts and emotions.
Service on-board: The flight attendants today get a 9 out of 10—they were very sweet and pleasant!
MET GALA PACKING LIST
The dress packing plan: My dress has been hand transported back and forth from LA for fittings multiple times over the past couple of months, so it will be awaiting me when I arrive! The dress has been completely custom made for me by a legendary designer (I can’t reveal who they are just yet!), which is an exciting process and a huge honor. I can’t wait to see it completely finished!
# of suitcases: Always two checked bags, plus a wheelie carry-on from Salvatore Ferragamo.
Packed in multiples: Several pairs of sunglasses (my current faves are Bulgari) and denim from Paige.
Destination essential: I never travel to New York without a camera, as there’s always something incredible to document, a LBD from Isabel Marant, a slip dress from Galvan (you can dress it up or down), a Rosie for Autograph silk night slip, a Saint Laurent black blazer, and a pair of black UGG Tomi sneakers for walking around. For beauty, dry shampoo and a treatment oil from Moroccan Oil. It’s not going in my suitcase, but my most important Met essential is my glam team—Christian Wood for hair, Kate Lee for makeup, and stylist Cher Coulter.
Checked bag beauty: Caudalie Purifying Mask for blemishes, Sisley Black Rose Mask for ultimate hydration upon arrival (it’s also perfect before makeup), iS Clinical Cleansing Complex and Active Serum for my everyday skincare routine, Shani Darden Resurface Retinol Reform to apply every night, Control Corrective sunscreen to wear every day under my makeup, and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads every few days for exfoliation.
Hotel: I always stay at The Mark when I’m in town for The Met Gala. It’s become a bit of a ritual. The hotel is super close to The Metropolitan Museum where the event is held, and the service is excellent!
Spa: Shibui Spa at The Greenwich Hotel
Salon: Marie Robinson
Nightcap: Top of the Standard or a drink with Cassandra Grey in her apartment at The Carlyle!
Tea: The lobby at The Mark
Shopping: violetgrey.com for cosmetics, Zitomer Pharmacy around the corner for emergencies, Fivestory for a fashion fix
Date night: A cozy corner booth at Sant Ambroeus on the Upper East Side
Workout: ModelFit with Justin Gelband or Body by Simone
NYC must-have: A slice of pizza or bag-o-nuts!
Day-off plan: A trip to Central Park followed by a leisurely stroll down Fifth Avenue
