For Awards Season 2015 VIOLET GREY is documenting Hollywood’s red-carpet necessities. The industry’s leading stars and artists will be nominating who they deem the best in various categories, from dinner clutch touch-up essentials to the most coveted facialists in town, for the #VIOLETawards series.

Whether it’s a trusted classic shoe in tones of navy, black or nude, or a bright, bold option in shades of red, fuchsia or emerald, selecting the perfect polish shade to complement your peekaboo evening shoe is an exercise in adept color-matching. To assist us in finding the most appropriate color, five red-carpet nail artists (their clients include the likes of Julianne Moore, Zoe Saldana and Jessica Biel) divulge their favorite polish pairings because an iconic look requires acute attention to every detail.

Shoe color: Emerald
Polish pairing: Tom Ford Smoke Red
“Smoke Red is rich and warm — almost a brick color; it plays nicely with a bright emerald-green shoe. The combination is surprising and fresh.”

Shoe color: Fuchsia
Polish pairing: Jinsoon Top Gloss
“When wearing a fuchsia shoe this awards season keep your pedicure neatly trimmed short, filed, buffed and polished with a clear top. Fuchsia is already such a bold statement, so it’s best to keep your toes understated and clean. Clear is the new black— think every Saint Laurent ad campaign!”

Shoe color: White
Polish pairing: RGB Doll
“While wearing a white shoe that is going to read brightly on the red carpet, it’s great to keep your toes neutral as to not create too many distractions. Doll is sure to complement your skin tone and keep you looking chic.”

Shoe color: Silver
Polish pairing: Yves Saint Laurent Gris Deco
“A light grey is the perfect shade of polish — sophisticated and cool enough to be paired up with a killer metallic heel! This shade offers the shoe the ability to take center stage.”

Shoe color: Gold
Polish pairing: Tom Ford Bordeaux Lust
“When the metallic sandal is already an accent of its own, it’s nice to have a neutral tone — but something chic and different, like a dark color instead of a nude.”

Shoe color: Navy
Polish pairing: Jinsoon Auspicious
“Steel grey is the perfect contrast to a navy shoe, and the two colors will complement each other in a red-carpet-worthy way.”

Shoe color: Nude
Polish pairing: RGB Haze
“The idea behind a nude shoe is to create a perceived elongation of the legs. I like a skin-toned shoe and a nude-ish nail color. Haze is just that — tonally similar to nude, but with more lavender for spice.”

Shoe color: Black
Polish pairing: Chanel Dragon
“I love a classic red, and Chanel’s Dragon is my all-time favorite true red polish. A red pedicure is the perfect way to add a contrasting pop to any black heel.”

Shoe color: Red
Polish pairing: Tom Ford Toasted Sugar
“Trying to find the perfect red polish to match a red shoe can be extremely difficult. So, when it comes to a red heel, I love pairing it with an elegant nude. Try not to compete with a striking hue — choosing a bold color against a red shoe can be overpowering. A nude polish offers more dimension and also gives the illusion of longer legs.”
