Here at The Violet Files, we’re divided on whether it’s better to give or to receive. But one thing is unanimous: When your recipient already has it all, it’s time to give custom—because it’s the thought and the execution that counts. Below, a roundup of our favorite personalized presents (all available by special order).
The stationers in our lives agree that there are few things classier than finishing off your beautifully wrapped gifts with personalized tags. Artist Happy Menocal will work with gifters to create sets decked out with images, monograms, and messages to suit your whims.

You can never have too many small leather goods, especially when they come from Acne’s newly launched collection. Each of the pouches, card cases, wallets, and keychains—like the one at left, which doubles as a mirror and necklace—can be personalized with bespoke fonts that the brand developed with artist Jack Pierson. Think fun mix-and-matched letters in myriad shapes and sizes. Now it’s personal.
Among Britain’s top exports—alongside Helen Mirren and fine teas—are its top-of-the-line pajamas. And fashion editor favorite Poplin makes some of the best in the game, offering crisp classic styles that can be monogrammed and embroidered with custom messages in concert with legendary embroidery atelier Hand & Lock. (Check out their collaboration with fashion brand Shrimps.)

No mom—whether your own or a new mother on your list—can resist the thrall of bespoke notebooks and photo albums from East Hampton’s beloved Vogel Bindery. A go-to among fashion editors, owner Paul Vogel creates each one-of-a-kind book from archival-quality materials, including hand-tanned leathers, pure cotton rag paper, and real gold tooling. (Those at left feature paintings by Vogel’s wife, Abigail, and are based on illustrations from a 1550s manuscript.)

Just in time for that winter surf escape—Sayulita, anyone?—New York–based Token custom builds boards to your specifications, and can incorporate personal illustrations, designs, and fonts. The brand’s recent collaboration with Hamptons denim brand 3x1 has made it a formidable presence among fashionable surfers.
Los Angeles jewelry designer (and VIOLET GREY neighbor) Irene Neuwirth also happens to be a great dog aficionado. So much so that she designed herself a one-off pendant featuring a tiny painting of her beloved Labradoodle, Teddy. Clients, including Lena Dunham, started clamoring for versions featuring their own nearest and dearest, inspiring Neuwirth to launch a dedicated customization program. (The Violet Files contributing stylist Karla Welch has one bearing an image of her daughter.)

There are few gifts more personal than lingerie. And with its recently launched made-to-measure program, iconic label La Perla gets more personal still, with slips, corsets, and other underpinnings crafted with the client’s choice of materials and embellishments. You can have as much (or as little) gold thread and Swarovski crystals as your heart desires.

No room of one’s own is complete without one’s own wallpaper design—especially a hand-painted creation by de Gournay. Whether your giftee longs for a flamingo tableau or gilded Chinoiserie motif, de Gournay’s artisans can guide her through the process of fashioning a custom work of art to truly deck those halls. Or, if you dare, you can create the design for her—just make sure to start early.
