As it turns out, very little. But VIOLET GREY founder Cassandra Grey reveals why we all need the Beats Studio3 Wireless in matte black.

My whole life, all I ever wanted was to have customers. At VIOLET GREY, we not only have customers, we have happy customers, who like us and appreciate how very seriously we take our product recommendations. We never recommend anything that isn’t found in the kits of our committee members (by the way, kits are what industry experts, like celebrity hair stylists and makeup artists, call the arsenal of products they fit into a suitcase and tote around on jobs). And if a product is new to the market, we conduct a rigorous testing process (see the VIOLET CODE) to determine if the product is best-in-class and therefore worthy of our customers’ hard-earned cash. If you saw how much we cared about finding the best hand cream, for example, you would surely be one of our customers, too. And if you are one of our customers, you are all I ever wanted in life—and if there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to direct message me on Instagram at @cassandragrey.
All of the products we recommend bring joy, convenience, and help our customers feel more confident in their skin. Our customers do not have time to try the approximately 14,000 new beauty products that are launched each year. For that reason, they have grown accustomed to VIOLET GREY telling them about all the good stuff. At some point, we started to think, why stop at beauty? Thus, headphones were added to a selective list of non-beauty products we wanted to curate—around the office we describe this category as “necessary luxuries.” And while I believe we are the best in the business at testing and approving beauty products—after all, we’ve dedicated our life’s work to just that—we do not know much about headphones or claim to be experts in the category.
When we set out to find the right headphones for our customers, we tried all the usual suspects. We scoured our feeds to find new leads. We begged our audiophile friends for recommendations. Eventually, we learned that there are a bunch of headphones that have good sound but lack in the other areas we value: design, cool-factor, pedigree, and performance. And then: Beats by Dre Studio3 Wireless in matte black.
WHY WE CHOSE BEATS STUDIO3 WIRELESS IN MATTE BLACK
- The design is comfortable and looks good on everyone.
- Matte black is attractive to the eye and nicely complements most airplane attire.
- The Studio3 Wireless covers your entire ear. This means the sound is incredible.
- For top-notch, own-them-forever headphones, they’re fairly priced (did you know some headphones cost 5k?!).
- The founders are Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine who are not only authorities in sound, but some of the most inspiring self-made entrepreneurs in the world. They sold Beats by Dre to Apple for a record three billion dollars (after almost tanking the deal). That is cool.
HOW TO USE THE BEATS STUDIO3 HEADPHONES
If you are feeling blue, simply put them on and play your favorite song and sing along.
When writing a film or television script, include a scene where your protagonist sings along to a song with headphones on. These scenes practically guarantee a hit (much like writing in a wedding or a funeral). Who could forget the hooker with a heart of gold, Vivian Ward, portrayed by Julia Roberts, singing Prince’s “Kiss” in the bathtub at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel? Is there anything better than Axel Foley, portrayed by Eddie Murphy, singing “Roxanne” while wearing headphones in Beverly Hills Cop? Or my personal favorite, super-math-nerd-genius Michael Burry—portrayed by Christian Bale in The Big Short—banging his desk with drumsticks to Pantera’s “By Demons Be Driven.” It’s the best.
If the prospect of making small talk with your seatmate on an airplane makes you uncomfortable, just put on your headphones. It’s the world’s most effective “Do Not Disturb” sign.
And finally: many of the most successful people in the world meditate at least five minutes daily. I believe if you meditate with headphones, the impact on your mindfulness is greater. To get you started, the following meditation resources are VIOLET CODE APPROVED: The Golden Light Meditation, Headspace, Calm.
