streicher secrets:

WHERE WINE
MEETS BEAUTY

Striiike salon’s beauty sister act and Violet Files columnists Kristie, Ashley, and Jenn Streicher share their favorite wine and beauty pairings.

Considering that we grew up in Northern California—prime wine-growing country—we Streichers definitely appreciate a fine wine. But it wasn’t until this year, when we met the fetching sommelier Helen Johannesen of Helen’s Wines, that we started to learn our way around a wine list. Helen, in turn, had many beauty queries for us.

So we combined our knowledge and decided to launch a monthly beauty and wine series at the salon—Helen provided the sips, we the beauty tips. Here, a distillation of our favorite wine and beauty findings.

Cheers,

CURRENT FAVORITE WINE?

Which wine am I not into is a better question, I’ve learned. It depends on the weather. When it’s really hot, rosé is the way to go, but I also love a red with food. Always red with food.

WHICH LIPSTICK BEST IMITATES A BOLD RED?

It’s funny because Helen taught me you really shouldn’t be wearing any lipstick when drinking wine because it affects the taste. It paints a pretty picture, but a real connoisseur shouldn’t have anything on her lips. If you can’t say no to lip color, use a matte that dries like a paint, like the ones from Hourglass.

IDEAL WINE TASTING BEAUTY LOOK?

I love using Laura Mercier Eye Caviar Sticks, which are the perfect tool for making a sexy smoky eye. Sometimes I like to apply a black eyeliner first, then the Caviar Stick, which I smudge out with a finger.

A strong brow is really good as well—I love using a tinted gel instead of filling in with pencil. If your date is studying you closely, you don’t want him to see fill lines.

FAVORITE WINE-INSPIRED BEAUTY?

I am a huge fan of Vintner’s Daughter. I love it so much, and I use it day and night. It’s the best face oil out there. I also love that it’s from a family-owned vineyard and that it’s moisturizing without being greasy—it’s one of the only oils I can use under makeup.

I also love Caudalie Elixir. I use it to wet my beautyblender because it smells good and keeps the tool moist; it’s a tiny bit of oil that helps smooth and blend makeup.

FAVORITE NEXT MORNING REMEDIES?

Basically wine is dehydrating, so I love using SK-II masks to remoisturize. They make eye ones which are amazing. In case of puffiness, the ZIIP is so good at firming and toning skin.

CURRENT FAVORITE WINE?

Gamay [a light French red] is my favorite transitional summer-to-winter wine.

FAVORITE VINEYARD?

I once had a private tour of the Louis Roederer Champagne House in Champagne, France, that seemed like a dream. FYI: Champagne is only real Champagne if it comes from this region; otherwise, it’s just sparkling wine.

PRO ORDERING TIP?

Helen taught us to look for the distributors when ordering from a restaurant. Generally speaking, if you know a few great wine distributors you can ask for wines from them and always win. Also, you can always ask to taste and send back if you don’t like it!

WINE DON’TS?

Don’t wear lip gloss or lipstick while tasting. It interferes with the flavor of the wine. I once got scoffed at because I reapplied gloss while tasting—a big no-no.

WHAT ABOUT WINE-INSPIRED BEAUTY?

The Vintner’s Daughter serum is definitely a Streicher family favorite. There’s something about the active botanicals and the process by which it’s made (similar to wine-making) that yields amazing results. We also use (and sell) a ton of Caudalie products that have similar qualities.

HOW DO YOU COMBAT POST-WINE PUFFINESS?

Add a cinnamon stick to your hot water or tea. Cinnamon has high levels of tannin, which is known to reduce inflammation.

CURRENT FAVORITE WINE?

Carbonic reds are my new favorite. I recently learned from Helen about carbonic maceration, a process that involves fermenting the grapes in giant vats while they are whole. Due the natural occurring yeast, the berry starts to break down inside the skin prior to crushing. The juice begins to ferment and free the juice and pulp from the skin, yielding a wine thats fruity with low tannins. Yum!

THE BEAUTY OF THE GRAPE

Caudalie founder Mathilde Thomas and her husband, Bertrand, have taught me a lot about the power of the grape. In this tiny fruit—and its wine-making abilities—they also discovered the benefits of resveratrol, Viniferine, and polyphenols in treating the signs of aging (wrinkles, lack of firmness, dark spots, dull complexion, dryness), and they created a beautiful skincare line around it.

WHICH LIPSTICK WON’T TRANSFER TO YOUR GLASS?

My favorite long-wearing lip color is actually a stain—I love the Serge Lutens Water Lip Color. This water-based formula tints your lips with a barely there flush, or you can layer for bolder color. I also like to use it as a base under lipstick for longer-lasting color.

FAVORITE VINEYARD?

Daou Vineyards, located at the very top of the hill in Paso Robles, has unparalleled views of the entire wine country. Great wine, friendly staff. I also love to visit Iron Horse in Healdsburg. This family-owned, working winery is located on a hill at the end of a one-lane road, overlooking the rolling hills of grape vines.  We’ve celebrated birthdays and even brought all the guests from Jenn’s wedding to this winery—it has been a S.S. favorite for years! In Napa, Odette, a Stag’s Leap offspring, has the most delicious wines especially if you like Cab. Demetria in Los Olivos is hands down the most beautiful place to taste wine in all of the Santa Barbara County—and everything is delicious.

IDEAL WINE TASTING BEAUTY LOOK?

Less is more. Mascara, bronzer or cheek color, and a lip stain. Sometimes day drinking can make you look really tired, so I always keep my ROHTO eye drops with me as well. They refresh your eyes—and entire face—when you’re feeling drab.

PERFECT WINE ACCOMPANIMENT?

Crusty, chewy bread and soft buttery cheese, please!
