Because Dad deserves a glowing complexion, too.

For some men, skin care begins and ends with a bar of soap. This, of course, is like trying to treat a broken arm with a Band-Aid. As any dermatologist will tell you, an effective daily regimen includes — at the very least — a proper cleanser, a nourishing shave cream, an SPF-enriched moisturizer and a lip balm.
Fortunately, Father’s Day presents the opportunity to bestow upon such grooming minimalists the products they sorely need. To help with your shopping, VIOLET GREY tapped makeup artist and skin-care savant Stephen Sollitto for his recommendations.

Below, Sollitto (who has two football-playing brothers, both apt to leave the room when the subject of moisturizers is brought up) details two routines just for men — one for the novice involving little more than cleanser and sunscreen, and another for those willing to advance to Skin Care AP.

For Sollitto, the first and most important step is getting men to swap out their soap for a facial cleanser. He recommends storing this gentle formula in the shower and within easy reach.

Sollitto raves about this menthol-and-camphor-infused shave cream. For best results, apply over damp skin.

Sun protection is a crucial skin-care step that many men skip. Make things easy for him with this light formulation that doubles as a daily moisturizer.

This multipurpose lip balm protects, restores and softens lips. “Keep one in your car, one in your pocket and one at your desk,” says Sollitto, “so you’re always moisturizing.”

Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser is an exfoliant gentle enough to be used daily. Massage onto a dry face before stepping into the shower and rinsing off.

After cleansing, splash a little of this treatment essence on the face to hydrate and activate the skin’s natural exfoliation process. Let it sit for a few seconds before applying moisturizer.

Many men tend to have dry complexions, so this ultra-hydrating moisturizer, designed for sensitive skin, is ideal.

The delicate area around the eyes requires special treatment — try RéVive’s Renewal Eye Cream to re-texturize, renew and prevent fine lines.

“Sun really is the worst thing for your skin,” says Sollitto, who recommends applying a chemical-free sunscreen throughout the day to ensure thorough coverage.

Men tend to be wary of lip balm. (Perhaps it reminds them too much of lipstick.) Fortunately, La Mer offers a colorless, gloss-free and, hence, suitably masculine version. A plus: The balm boasts a refreshing mint flavor.

Up the skin-care ante with a glycolic acid treatment. With a simple swipe across the face in the evening after cleansing and toning, these pads help even tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

This facial spray is Sollitto’s personal staple. He keeps a bottle in his kitchen sink to help hydrate his skin throughout the day.
