You could say that Emma Roberts was born a beauty girl. “When I was four, I went into my mom’s bathroom, found the most expensive cream, and smeared it all over my face,” she says. “I remember being enamored by it all — the products, the scents, the ritual, the transformation.”
She was also born into Hollywood royalty with an A-list DNA that is represented in everything from her striking smile (which evokes that of her Oscar-winning Aunt Julia) to the alluring emotion she brings to each of her characters (American Horror Stories, Scream Queens, and 2020’s Holidate). “I’ve always loved the getting-ready process both on and off camera...of changing my hair and makeup to embody a different vibe and inspire a different personality,” she says. Since her debut at age 9, Roberts has starred in more than 50 projects on both the big and small screens. Now, at 30, she has added motherhood to her résumé (during a pandemic no less), seeking to strike the perfect balance between a blossoming career and family life.
Our team of editors stocked this new mom’s VIOLET CODE APPROVED self-care routine with ten beauty superstars we know will exceed Emma’s very high expectations, stat.
“I love CHANEL mascaras — I think they’re the best!” confesses Emma. We tend to agree. This chic wand combines long and short bristles to deliver just the right amount of inky, volume-boosting mascara from roots to tips for a luscious fan of fluttery perfection.
“In the evening, I enjoy a full spa-like moment. I’ll wash my face with the Dr. Barbara Sturm Cleanser, which I love, and sometimes add in her scrub as well,” says Emma. To kick things up a notch at night, this serum infused with antioxidant-rich purslane, molecularly-balanced hyaluronic acid, and hydrating cotton thistle extract provides pro-facial results without the extra work. Slather it on and wake up to gloriously smooth skin.
“The bath is my safe place,” says Emma. “I add oils and salts — anything to make it feel special and soothing.” With medicinal witch hazel, calming chamomile extract, and antibacterial sage, this indulgent bath oil is something of a sleeping potion, relaxing muscles and vaporizing stress in a matter of minutes. We’ll bet this one will come in handy with a newborn in tow.
“I’m obsessed with mists — so much so that I put a few in my hospital bag because I need a mist when I give birth!” laughs Emma. One that we can’t get enough of is this award-winning, intensely-hydrating formula packed with protective tomato stem cells, moisturizing rosehip oil, and ultra-soothing thermal water from Hungary. Spritz it on and marvel at the instant glow.
“Sunscreen is so important,” explains Emma. “But it’s so hard to find a good one that works well under makeup.” The trick? Choosing a formula that doubles as a primer, like this oil-free, non-toxic sunscreen from French brand Chantecaille. Its creamy consistency melts into skin seamlessly, leaving a dewy and hydrated finish behind, while soothing botanicals like cherry blossom and antioxidant-rich white tea extract offer extra protection against environmental stressors.
“Face oils are my favorite — I’m always switching it up and looking for new ones that do more than moisturize.” We’re happy to report that the search is officially over, Emma. Omega-rich but inexplicably silky, this all-natural, cult-favorite formula is the Ferrari of face oils. Dullness, dryness, irritation, and rough patches don’t stand a chance. Apply it solo or mix it with your regular moisturizer for added protection.
“One of my makeup staples is the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat - Pillowtalk, which I’m completely obsessed with,” says Emma. The quickest way to level up that liner is by topping it with this glossy balm in the same shade. One swipe gives lips a demure flush and pillowy fullness.
“I still haven’t found the best body scrub — it’s either too rough, too smooth, or doesn’t wash off fully,” confesses Emma. Enter the Goldilocks of body exfoliators: Nécessaire’s just-right formula gently buffs away roughness with a combination of bamboo charcoal, pumice, marula oil, and a trio of AHA/BHAs, including glycolic and salicylic acids. As a weekly treatment, it turns lackluster skin luminous.
“Hair masks intrigue me because it’s so hard to find something that works with extensions,” says Emma. “I’m always on the hunt for a good mask to save my strands.” The perfect fix for Emma’s dilemma is this nourishing formula created by famed Parisian hair colorist Christophe Robin, which does more than heap on hydration. Vitamin E and antioxidant-rich prickly pear oil penetrates to the core to repair damage and prevent breakage from happening in the future — extensions or not.
“To me, a perfume or a scented lotion can remind you of a specific time. There’s a lot of nostalgia with fragrance,” says Emma. To inspire future memories, this masterpiece by perfume architect Frédéric Malle is a heady cloud of over 400 roses spiked with notes of warm sandalwood, juicy raspberry, and spicy clove. Make it your signature scent and the you-smell-so-good compliments will always come.
Emma’s world-class regimen deserves a beautiful home and our signature white Makeup Bag is just the encasement for the job. Whether placed on her vanity or packed in a suitcase, it serves as a gentle reminder for Emma to stick to her VIOLET CODE APPROVED routine.
