Globe-trotting designers Gilda Ambrosio and Giorgia Tordini of buzzy fashion label Attico hold forth on their beauty rituals.
Written By MEGAN CONWAY
Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio have found street style acclaim with their modern mix of fresh-faced beauty and elegant boudoir-inspired fashion. Now, with their cult label Attico, they’re creating their own antique-inflected peignoir, rendered in lush velvet and soft satin. The key to wearing opulent fabrics from day to night? Simple, radiant skin and barely done hair—relaxed beauty at its best.
Tordini and Ambrosio met through mutual friends in Milan several years ago and say they had a “bond from the very beginning,” although the idea of launching a line that would blend their distinct styles came to them later, during a taxi-ride brainstorm in New York City. “Exotic, colorful, and sexy,” Attico’s highly collectible pieces—luxury bedroom-inspired basics by way of an opium den—were an instant hit among the fashion cognoscenti when they launched last February. And the buzz is only growing.
Their new collection, showing in Milan this week, is an homage to their Italian roots and globe-trotting lifestyle in equal measure. “Our Attico woman is traveling to far-flung locales,” say Tordini and Ambrosio. “Stay tuned.”
On the eve of their presentation (and amid their transatlantic travels), the design duo checked in with The Violet Files to share their must-have Fashion Month beauty picks—and the bags in which they’re keeping them.
GIORGIA AND GILDA’S FASHION MONTH ESSENTIALS
FASHION MONTH MORNING ROUTINES
GILDA: There’s no time in the morning during Fashion Month! My days are so hectic. I care most about hydrating my skin, so after showering I use a serum and then put on La Mer Creme de la Mer as moisturizer. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, usually just brown mascara and sometimes Lip Glow in a pink or red color. My hair is impossible to manage by myself—it’s actually very curly and I’m forced to go to the hair salon every week to have it straightened.
GIORGIA: The first thing I do in the morning, even before coffee, is use Acqua alle Rose by Roberts as a tonic on my face. It’s so refreshing and really wakes me up. Considering it’s still summer weather, I’ll use Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream Light as a moisturizer. Otherwise, during winter I switch to La Mer Creme de La Mer. I rarely go to the hair salon or make big changes to my hairstyle—it’s always been my natural color, never dyed, and most of the time I just let it air-dry to get natural waves. I keep my makeup to a minimum. My foundation is MAC Studio Face and Body, I use Chanel Les Beiges Glow on my cheekbones, and then I add YSL Effet Faux Cils Shocking mascara in black. This is the best I can do during Fashion Week!
GO-TO FASHION MONTH BEAUTY LOOK
GILDA: I prefer maintaining a very natural look.
GIORGIA: Natural during the day, smoky eyes at night—lots of mascara and black eye shadow.
MORNING BOOST: COFFEE, TEA, OR OTHER?
GILDA: Lots of coffee.
GIORGIA: Stretching and yoga—and coffee.
DOES YOUR ROUTINE CHANGE BY CITY?
GILDA: In Paris, more red lipstick, as the French do.
GIORGIA: Nothing changes for me: natural skin and a dramatic eye is my uniform for makeup.
GETTING DRESSED STRATEGY
GILDA: I always pick out my outfit in the morning depending on how I feel that day. It probably takes ten minutes.
GIORGIA: I sometimes try to plan my outfit the night before, but it never works! I always end up getting dressed while running around my place drinking coffee and listening to music. When I don’t know what to wear, I go for a pair of skinny high-waisted jeans and pumps.
