Throughout awards season, VIOLET GREY will be deconstructing the nominees’ most memorable red-carpet beauty moments of the year. On hand for commentary (and the occasional insider tip) will be the actresses’ makeup artist, hairstylist or both.
The immensely talented and impossibly likable Emma Stone inaugurates the series.

Last year was a game changer for Stone, who delivered star turns in a blockbuster (The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opposite longtime beau, Andrew Garfield), a Woody Allen period romp (Magic in the Moonlight) and a Broadway musical (holding her own as the unsinkable Sally Bowles in Cabaret). However, it was her role as the troubled, heartbroken Sam, in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s surrealist film, Birdman, that caught the critics’ attention and earned her three Best Supporting Actress nominations and counting.

Stone’s performance on the press circuit, meanwhile, has been equally triumphant. Photo after photo of the actress looking utterly flawless — here at the Venice Film Festival, there at a Tokyo film premiere — left the beauty world breathless and clamoring to imitate makeup artist Rachel Goodwin and hairstylist Mara Roszak’s handiwork. “This was the year that Emma really came into her own on the red carpet,” says Goodwin, who has worked with Stone for the last seven years. “I think part of her secret is that she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She can pull off a vampy berry lip or ’60s liner with the same sense of levity and fun.”

Below, Goodwin and Roszak discuss Stone’s best looks, product essentials and more.

MAKEUP ESSENTIALS
“I’m obsessed with Emma’s brows,” says Goodwin, who uses Chanel Crayon Sourcils in Brun Naturel to add extra fullness and definition. Other products in frequent rotation include Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Orchid and Chanel Le Volume Mascara in Noir.
STAPLE HAIR TOOLS
“Emma has a very slight natural wave in her hair, so I typically use texturizing products like L'Oreal Paris Boost It High Lift Creation Spray to enhance her texture along with a one- or one-and-a-quarter-inch GHD iron,” says Roszak.

SIGNATURE LOOK: THE CHAMELEON
Stone’s red-carpet looks (much like her choice of film roles) display an impressive range. “I don’t know if I’ve done the same style twice on her, and I can’t say that about many other [actresses],” says hairstylist Mara Roszak. “There’s no one look we fall back on,” adds makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. “We try and tune into the frequency of each event. We look at things like her dress or the film she’s promoting or the city we’re in. For instance, in Paris, certain colors come out that don’t in Los Angeles. Or maybe in Japan we’ll take a certain risk we wouldn’t elsewhere.”

BIGGEST BEAUTY RISK THIS YEAR: BOLD LIPS, BARE EYE
For the Paris premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in AprilGoodwin and Roszak complemented the edgy minimalism of Stone’s faux-leather Lanvin dress with sleek and structured hair; a bright, crimson, matte lip (dubbed a “power lip” by Goodwin) and a barely-there shimmery eye. Runner-up: the Berlin premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. “I really wanted to do a powder-blue eye shadow,” says Goodwin, referring specifically to Revlon Color Stay in Periwinkle. “Emma was kind of hesitant, so she had to trust me it would turn out okay.” [Editor’s note: It did.]

BEST LOOK IN 2014: PLUM FOCUS
For the Venice Film Festival premiere of Birdman in August, Goodwin explored a soft berry palette with a semi-sheer magenta lip and mulberry shadow, while Roszak executed a textured, side-swept bob that has since inspired countless imitations. “The whole look really came together effortlessly,” says Roszak.
