I think any product like Dr. Janine Mahon’s Rejuvenating Breast Oil that gets women talking about their breasts and breast health is a great thing. Approximately one in eight US women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Despite jaw-dropping statistics like that, women’s health issues are often overlooked, under-discussed, and underfunded in this country. For that reason, it’s important to encourage dialogue around subjects and areas of the body, such as the breasts, that might otherwise be ignored. This oil isn’t a substitute for regular monthly breast self-exams (in addition to yearly check-ups with your doctor and annual mammograms once you turn 40), but it is a reminder that you need to keep this very important part of your body top of mind, which not everyone does.

As far as the actual product goes, it has a great concept. I love that it promotes the idea of manifesting healthy energy within the body from its roots in Chinese herbal medicine. And it has an obvious moisturizing benefit. The Dr. Janine Mahon Rejuvenating Breast Oil hydrates and helps improve skin barrier function, making the delicate breast area more resilient. In fact, there’s no need to stop at your breasts: You can also smooth it on your collarbones, décolletage, and even down to the belly and uterus. I found the herbal scent—a mixture of frankincense and myrrh—to be very soothing and pleasant, which is a plus! You can apply Dr. Janine Mahon’s Rejuvenating Breast Oil before or after you get out of the shower, or anytime on dry skin, because it absorbs quite evenly. How often you need to use it depends on how dry your skin is—once a week could be fine or you may find yourself applying it every other day. It’s really up to you. What’s key is that you’re taking a moment for yourself, spending time to familiarize yourself with your body, and getting into the habit of self-care—something we, as women, probably don’t make enough time for.
