Before her face was plastered across buses and billboards, Coco Baudelle—a multi-hyphenate model, actress, and filmmaker from Montreal—attended law school, worked at a bank, and spent some time behind a Dior makeup counter. “At the time, Dior only hired trained makeup artists,” says Baudelle. “I never studied makeup artistry, but I loved doing it on myself and my friends—and I desperately needed a job.” She was put to the test when an employee called out sick and she was tasked by her “very serious” boss with a bride-to-be. “They gave me a belt full of brushes and the wheel was mine. I probably took double the time it would take anyone else to do her makeup, but the woman was thrilled, she looked exquisite, and I got the job,” she says.

While Baudelle often still moonlights as a makeup artist for friends when they come over to her New York City apartment, her full brows and naturally lush lips serve her even better on the other side of the counter—and attract plenty of attention from beauty addicts who want to replicate her features. After being discovered on Instagram by Glossier founder and CEO Emily Weiss, Baudelle can now be found starring in beauty campaigns and, even at 5’2” and a half, walking the runway.

While she loves an “effortless look,” she is a self-proclaimed “makeup collector” who keeps her stash stored in Glossier’s pink, bubble-lined pouches under her bathroom sink. “It’s my little heaven,” she says. By day, you’re likely to find her sporting perfectly curled lashes, a bit of blush, and flawless skin (with help from some strategically applied concealer). “I definitely get excited about makeup as the night falls,” she adds. “I like to play with colorful eyeshadows, lip liners, and gloss.” The one thing that remains consistent, however, is her beauty icon: Bianca Jagger. “She fascinates me. When I see photos of her from the ’70s and from today, it seems like she’s always doing what she wants,” says Baudelle. “There is also something about her features that are unusual, a bit quirky, and uneven—just like me!”

Naturally, VIOLET GREY challenged the actress to channel the Studio 54 legend and let us photograph the process every step of the way. We also provided Baudelle with a few product picks guaranteed to make a major statement after dark. No white horse required.

NEW MAKEUP MUSTS

“Right now, my skin is pretty happy,” says Baudelle. “It’s another story on the hottest days of summer or the dead of winter in New York. My skin is never ready for that.” Infused with pharmaceutical-grade botanicals, peptides, and antioxidants, this lightweight-yet-intensely moisturizing formula provides the perfect dose of hydration regardless of the weather. Plus, it doubles as a makeup primer.

Whether she’s out all night on the dance floor or parked in front of the TV doing hair and makeup for friends (one of her favorite “staying in” activities), Baudelle can fake eight hours of sleep in just 10 minutes with this depuffing mask. A combination of gingko biloba, arnica, chestnut, and linden blossom brightens dark circles, smooths fine lines, and rejuvenates tired skin.

“This lipstick is dark and mysterious without making me look like I only come out at night—even if that is sometimes the case!” says Baudelle. A luxe blend of soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter, and chamomile flower oil lend this luminous berry lip color an ultra-creamy texture for effortless application.

“My heart always gets a little crushed when my eyeshadow looks good in person but messy in photos,” says Baudelle. While this steely taupe is easy to blend, the high-impact, long-lasting pigments stay put all night.

“I really love lip liner,” says Baudelle, who dramatically defines her pout like the “beauties did in the ’60s.” Inspired by lip liner “genius” Audrey Hepburn and “a photo of a woman in her 70s with masterfully lined lips in a light rosy color,” this velvety, waterproof formula will help her create a believably lush look without smudging, feathering, or transferring.

“I’ve always been envious of people who have naturally pink cheeks,” admits Coco. This creamy blush stuck will give the model a cherub-worthy flush on the spot while soothing skin with moisturizing jojoba oil and a youth-preserving raspberry extract.

Tiny, tough-to-camouflage purple veins on the sides of her cheeks are one of Baudelle’s biggest beauty insecurities. Packed with high-coverage pigments, this featherweight and flexible concealer features water-repellent technology that resists creasing, caking, and streaking.

“Nothing has ever felt easy when it comes to makeup, but I do find it really fun,” says Baudelle. “I’m not sure I truly have found the right shade of foundation yet, but my skin tone always changes.” This hydrating elixir delivers the perfect level of coverage and self-adjusting color. Plus, the breathable, serum-like texture means this weightless foundation won’t cake or settle into pores.

“I love a long, skinny wing like Priscilla Presley,” says Baudelle. This refillable liquid liner modeled after a Japanese calligraphy pen delivers bold bands of black with the utmost precision.

“If I have too much fun getting ready, there’s no doubt that I’ll be late, so I have to be focused,” says Baudelle, who likes to light a candle and put on some blues or soul music to get in the mood. “If you give me three hours, I will take three hours!” Whether she’s taking her sweet time or speeding through her routine, this candle laced with hints of lemongrass, pomelo, rosemary, cedar, and sugar cane will fill the room with an alluring aroma inspired by after-hours beauty rituals. Plus, it burns for 70 hours, meaning it will last no matter how much time Baudelle spends in front of the mirror.
