violette’S
nighttime
routine

Our French beauty expert reveals the skincare regimen she can’t go a night without.

Meet Violette—a girl who is more likely to be found applying makeup in the backseat of a moving vehicle or on the streets of New York than she is perched at her vanity. A girl who, like you, always has someplace to be and no time to get there. In this weekly video series, VIOLET GREY follows the Parisian makeup artist around town to chronicle her infamous on-the-go beauty routines. The rules? No crew, no set, no artificial lighting, no retouching—and no contouring.

Regardless of what country she might be in—or even whether she’s had an alcohol-fueled late night—Violette will never miss a beat with her evening skincare regimen. Skincare is her foundation, which is smart: without a solid base, your makeup has to work that much harder. In this week’s tutorial, the Parisian makeup artist shares her thorough nighttime routine, going step-by-step through the products and techniques that maintain her luminous complexion. Bonne nuit!

Violette always starts by washing her face with May Lindstrom’s hydrating Honey Mud Cleansing Silk. She notes, “The [creamy] texture is great and it smells so good.” Then she uses the French staple Biologique Recherche P50. She also says that the exfoliating lotion may sting at first, but that you can dilute it with water until your skin gets used to it.

Once a week, Violette uses two masks. The first is the Pratima Sandalwood Rose Mask, which has sandalwood mud to purify the skin. After 15 minutes she rinses with a warm towel and mists her face with the Tata Harper Essence. Then she applies her second mask, the SK II Facial Treatment Mask, to brighten and hydrate her complexion. Finally she tops it off with the Crème Echinoderm Moisturizer again. “Even in an extreme case,” she affirms, “I’m still going to have my routine done.”

Violette spritzes La Mer Mist to kill any bacteria, and then alternates between two Granion ampoules. Traditionally, they are to be ingested, but Violette pats them into her skin to balance out her complexion. She then uses the Biologique Recherche Fluide VIP 02 to detoxify, and layers on the Crème Echinoderm Moisturizer for hydration.

“I love to use the La Mer Concentrate on scars,” says Violette. “It speeds up the healing process. One day I had a burn and it went it away in just a few days.”

Violette treats her hair just like her skin. “I use the Biologique Recherche P50 Lotion on my roots to keep my scalp healthy,” she says. “Then I use this [hydrating] Leonor Greyl Mask all over my hair, leave it on until late in the evening, and wash it out. My two favorite shampoos are the Leonor Greyl Reviviscence and the Shu Uemura Shusu Sleek Shampoo. And of course I use conditioner, always.”
