The ZIIP Beauty founder reveals her personal strategy for maintaining a clear complexion.
ZIIP Beauty founder and electrical esthetician Melanie Simon is perpetually radiant. She’s even made her appointment-only magic available for at-home use with her palm-size ZIIP Nano Current Skincare Device, a sleek, user-friendly contraption that links up to an iPhone app targeting dry skin, signs of aging, and acne. In her weekly video series, the skin care guru gives it to you straight up (a phrase she constantly employs), revealing her anti-aging techniques and go-to products.
Secrets To A Clearer
“This is the dirty little secret that nobody wants you to know about,” the pro says as she whips out her bottle of Vitamin A. While Simon suggests taking the vitamin three days in a row and no more than 10 times in a month, she recommends consulting with your doctor first. When it comes to cleansing, Simon has a few favorites for protecting (and not stripping) your skin. “These Bioderma wipes are awesome,” she says, “because you can really see what is coming off.”
When it comes to cleansing waters, she favors Bioderma’s Sensibo H20 and Koh Gen Do’s Cleansing Spa Water. “This [Bioderma] one is a cleaner formula, explains the expert, “[Koh Gen Do] has a bit of lactic acid in it, so it gives you a little bit of a kick, and when we’re talking about acne this might be a better choice.” Simon’s trick to getting the most out of the cleansers: apply them with gauze or a cotton pad. If you still feel like you need a second cleanse, Erno Laszlo’s Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar is a personal favorite of Simon’s.
“This toner is going to make a huge change for people breaking out,” says Simon. The ZIIP founder deems Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 one of her “magical formulas” that’s best applied on a gauze pad before pressing into the skin. Follow up the toner with the Biologique Recherche’s Crème Dermopurifiante, which balances oil and dryness. “Even if you’re oily you can use it,” she adds.” Also, if you’re super dry you can use it, and it’s really going to keep the breakout down.”

Simon keeps Amanda Lacey’s Miracle Tonic on hand for spot treatments. Simply dip a cotton swab into the formula and apply after your toner. The esthetician also credits mineral makeup to keeping irritation at bay, “I like it pressed because it’s a bigger particle size and it’s not going to go into your pores,” she says. “It creates this shield, so you’re not absorbing it.”
“Acne puts off a positive electrical charge, and you want to combat that with something negative,” says Simon. The solution is Simon’s very own ZIIP Nano Current Device and Conductive Gel Treatment that uses an acne program and an iPhone app to distribute negative charges. “I promise you it’s not going to break you out,” she reassures us speaking to the conductive gel, “that was my number one criteria after making sure it was highly conductive.” The treatment only takes 1 minute per zone (or 8 minutes if you’re doing your entire face).
