BEAUTY LESSONS:

Your Everything
Guide to
Hand Care

The age of overwashing is upon us. Here’s how to nurture super sanitized mitts.

Written By ERIN FLAHERTY

The eyes may be windows to the soul, but nothing tells one’s life story like your hands. For at least a year now, you’ve been scrubbing and sanitizing like you mean it, and for most of us, a professional manicure is but a distant memory. While you may be fastidious when it comes to your 12-step facial routine, it’s time to give your hands some love. We spoke with fashion and Hollywood’s most glamorous nailist, Tom Bachik, for secrets of the trade, and curated a collection of our beloved Violet Code Approved products to ensure your hands are just as pampered as your face.

FOR CREATING THE PERFECT CANVAS
While exfoliating every other inch of your body is de rigueur, your hands tend to get forgotten. “Hand scrubs are perfect add-ons at home for beautifully soft, luxurious skin,” says Bachik. “By exfoliating hands prior to using your treatment you remove dehydrated, dead skin cells, which not only smooths but preps skin to better receive cuticle oils and finishing lotions.” We’re obsessed with using our Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel Pads on our hands to gently yet efficiently remove unwanted layers and dead skin. They’re packed with alpha and beta hydroxy acids (including glycolic, salicylic, lactic, citric, and malic) to loosen dead skin cells, stimulate collagen, firm, and brighten.

FOR CLEANING UP ON-THE-GO
It’s time to upgrade your most important, ahem, “accessory” of the season. “With constant hand washing and the never-ending use of hand sanitizers, nails and skin can become over processed and dehydrated more than ever,” notes Bachik. Do yourself a favor and invest in a much chicer, gentler version of your typical drugstore product. The Big Sur After Rain antiseptic spray incorporates glycerin into its formula to moisturize while you disinfect. Bonus: Scent notes like “rain,” eucalyptus, magnolia, and wood conjure an idyllic drive up the California coastline.

FOR EVERYDAY ANTI-AGING

You probably have a tired, rarely used old hand lotion stashed far back in your vanity somewhere. Now, more than ever, is the time to finally stick to the beauty resolution to actually commit to this much needed, oft-neglected product. We swear by this vegan, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, recyclable tube of moisturizer packed with peptide, vitamins, shea butter and marula which packs a luxuriously rich punch, but never leaves a greasy residue.

FOR NEXT LEVEL TRANSFORMATION
“On set, time is limited, so any pampering steps are reduced and we get down to just what’s needed to look amazing,” Bachik explains. That said, IRL he recommends adding a potent product into your routine: “Intensive hand treatments do more than just lotions by helping to remove wrinkles and fine lines, even skin tone, and protect against future damage.” Bader’s miraculously anti-aging skincare formulas have a cult-following, so meet his soon-to-be similarly legendary hand treatment, which contains honey, white peony, and the same regenerative Trigger Factor Complex found in his facial products. Keep your hand treatment on your bedside table so you can slather it on at night.

FOR CLEANSING WITHOUT STRIPPING
Admit it: You probably don’t give a ton of thought to whatever hand soap is on your bathroom sink, and you also probably end up doing most of your hand washing at the kitchen counter. Detergents dry out your skin like no others, and just like upgrading your hand sanitizer is a smart move, it’s time to switch to a sweeter hand wash. This Byredo formula transforms the task of hand-washing into an enjoyable moment – while cleansing and softening.

FOR DAILY CUTICLE MAINTENANCE
Healthy cuticles can make or break your nails, and the maintenance of such is what we miss most about professional manicures. On set, Bachik takes the business of cleaning the area as a sacred duty. When it comes to grooming, he cautions: “Remember the cuticle is a seal that protects the area where the nail cells grow, so we don’t want to be aggressive and break that seal as it could cause soreness and lead to the chance of infection.” He recommends using a cuticle oil like Tenoverten’s that contains effective carrier ingredients like jojoba, argan and rosehip that will penetrate. “Cuticle oils containing mineral oils just sit on top of the skin,” he explains. Another hot tip? “Apply when nails feel dry, but most importantly at night before bed. This allows the oils to work for hours before hands are washed again.”

FOR SHOWING OFF YOUR HANDIWORK
For highest shine and longer wear, Bachik recommends using a base coat to promote color adhesion and help smooth the nail surface. And note that polish will dry faster if you allow each coat to dry at least a minute in between applications. “During that downtime I like to use an old lip or gel eyeliner brush dipped in remover to remove any excess color around the nails that may have gotten on the cuticles,” he says. We love J Hannah’s whimsical mid-century modern-inspired shades, but right now, Bachik is particularly feeling teal green shades and Chanel’s Gitane, Washed Denim, and Prune Dramatique. Now go forth and nail it.

FOR CREATING THE PERFECT CANVAS

While exfoliating every other inch of your body is de rigueur, your hands tend to get shafted. “Hand scrubs are perfect add-ons at home for beautifully soft, luxurious skin,” says Bachik. “By exfoliating hands prior to using your treatment you remove dehydrated, dead skin cells, which not only smooths but preps skin to better receive cuticle oils and finishing lotions.” We’re obsessed with Susanne Kaufman’s mean and clean exfoliating peel that uses plant-based ingredients to gently yet efficiently remove unwanted layers. It’s also packed with hydrating shea butter, sweet almond oil, and anti-inflammatory vitamin to leave a nourished, silky finish.
