Known for giving out her cell phone number to our Melrose Place flagship shoppers, VIOLET GREY brand ambassador and makeup artist Kira Nasrat is as beloved for her easy charm and humor as she is for her sophisticated smoky eye looks. Clients (who include Gwyneth Paltrow, Margot Robbie, and Jamie Chung) rely on the forthcoming honesty and sage beauty advice she dispenses at a moment’s notice, and most have her on speed-dial. Here, Nasrat brings that beloved personalized service to Beauty Hotline, a new monthly column for The Violet Files.

First up, Nasrat answers reader questions on first-date makeup strategies, first-sleepover packing essentials, and more. Read on to learn from the master...
I’m going on a first date soon and I want soft, not-too-done-up makeup. Any advice on a no-fail first-date look?

My first and favorite tip actually has nothing to do with products: Just pick a place with great lighting. The Sunset Tower is one of my favorites in Los Angeles because it has very forgiving candlelight, which makes everyone look young and flawless. I’m sure he has seen your Facebook page, your Snapchat, and your Instagram, so you’ll want to look as perfect as all those heavily filtered selfies.

If your aim is to look natural, you don’t want to overdo the eyes. I’d go for the Armani Eyes to Kill Intense Silk Eyeshadow in 6, which is a gorgeous gold with a bit of shimmer but isn’t too sparkly. Apply onto eyelids with the back of your finger and then blend it out. For kissable lips, try the Chantecaille Brilliant Lip Gloss in Love.

The Tower’s great lighting offers a perfect opportunity to enlist a highlighter—the candlelight will really pick it up and make you look radiant. Dab Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate on the high points of the cheekbones. Finally, add a dash of perfume—something citrus-based and summery—on the ends of your hair so if you get nervous and start playing with it, he’ll pick up just a hint of fragrance.

I’m spending the night with my new love interest for the first time. What should I pack?

Top priority? Olas mouthwash. He might want to kiss you the next morning, and fresh breath is a beautiful thing. If you wake up in the night, make a trip to the bathroom and give your teeth a quick rinse. Applying dry shampoo before bedtime is also a great idea in case your hair is oily; it also helps create the perfect sexy bedhead look for the morning after. Body oil is a must, but don’t use anything that is too strong or flowery—I prefer something like the African Botanics Marula Firming Botanical Body Oil, which smells like a spa. As far as attire is concerned, try something classic like TyLynn Nguyen lingerie. It’s sexy and comfortable, and you won’t look like you’re trying too hard.

If you really want to go full Marilyn, before turning down spritz a bit of perfume, curl your lashes to brighten up your eyes, and dab the RMS concealer under your eyes and on any blemishes. I did that with my husband at the beginning of our relationship and he thought I just naturally looked that good.

I’m headed to my high school reunion and my old flame will be there. I want to look like post-Charles Princess Diana. Any tips?

Make sure you’re exfoliating your body. Diana knew how to show off her décolletage, legs, and a bit of cleavage (see: her famous “Revenge Dress”), and a regular scrubbing will help those areas look luminous. Use the Leonor Greyl hair mask once or twice a week, depending on the dryness of your mane.

Glowing skin was one of Princess Di’s signatures, so be sure to drink a lot of water and cut down on sugar and alcohol until the big event. Drinking green tea three times a day and taking a spoonful of coconut oil can also help detox your skin.

I also recommend the Sisley Black Rose Mask and the Sisley Black Rose Oil to plump the complexion, even out the skin tone, and erase fine lines. If you’re planning ahead, use the mask once a week for a month leading up the big event and apply the oil before you go to bed. If not, even a night-before application will help. The more flawless your skin, the less foundation you need—meaning you will look a regal ten years younger than the mean girls from your graduating class.
