VIOLET GREY brand ambassador and makeup artist Kira Nasrat reveals her favorite beauty looks for the new season.
Known for sharing her cell phone number with our Melrose Place flagship shoppers, VIOLET GREY brand ambassador and makeup artist Kira Nasrat is as beloved for her easy charm and humor as she is for her sophisticated smoky eye looks. Clients (who include Gwyneth Paltrow, Margot Robbie, and Jamie Chung) rely on the honest and sage beauty advice she dispenses at a moment’s notice. Here, Nasrat brings that beloved personalized service to Beauty Hotline, a new monthly column for The Violet Files. This month, she addresses the conundrum of how to update one’s beauty look for the new season.
To wit: just as the autumn foliage changes color (outside of Hollywood, at least), so too should your makeup. And with her well-manicured fingers firmly on the pulse of the latest trends, who better than Kira to advise on easy updates? Here, she shares suggestions for putting your best face forward this fall, whether you want to add a little glitter to your repertoire or bleach your brows (sans the bleach).

Fall priorities may include adding a bit of shimmer—but not too much—to your life. For just the right glitter-to-eye ratio, use the bottom left shade from the Tom Ford Eye Palette under the brow and all over the lids, extending out to the cheekbones for an exaggerated highlighter effect.
During the fall, expect to see a lot of polished complexions. There’s no contouring, only a slight flush on the cheeks—imagine a woman who just walked out of a Ralph Lauren ad. To achieve the look, apply the lightweight Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation in a circular motion with the Bobbi Brown Blending Brush. Then, with a damp Beautyblender, press gently all over to make it appear seamless. Wear it with a cable knit sweater and a dashing leading man.
Instead of doing a defined lash, try a spidery look—it’s especially fun for a night out. First, curl your lashes with the Utowa Lash Curler to open and brighten up the eye. Then layer on two to three coats of mascara. To get the clumpy effect, use the Rubis Eyelash Tweezer and press a few lashes together.
The smoky eye of the moment is the perfect hazy gray—it’s not grunge, it’s moody. With the Chanel Lucia Pica Chanel Eyeshadow Palette, very lightly sweep the lower left red shade all over the eyelids with a Utowa Hood Eyeshadow Brush. Then, using the dark brown on the lower right, take the pointy Utowa brush and shade underneath the eyes. For the final touch, drag a the Giorgio Armani Smooth Eye Pencil up and down and back and forth twice along lower waterline.
While you may have noticed dramatically bleached brows on the runway once again, you don’t actually need to zap the color out of your arches to get the effect. Instead, use the lightest shade of MAC Brow Gel and comb it through—it looks cool even if you have really dark brows. It’s an easy, instant transformation for those who dare.
