Ahhh, sleep. Does anything make one feel better than a full, undisrupted eight hours? It gives us energy, improves cognitive function, aids digestion and metabolism, wards off illness, and makes our skin look amazing.

Yet, for most of us, truly restful sleep is an elusive objective. Myriad factors inform the quality of sleep we get, from food and alcohol/caffeine intake, to our sex lives and menstrual cycles. And while we know that quality sleep is a fundamental aspect of a healthy lifestyle, it is often forfeited in favor of work, social connectivity, and recreational fun. In other words, it can feel impossible to get a great night of sleep.

As our sleep quality can be seen as a holistic measure of what is going on in our lives, we asked Susanne Kaufmann, the namesake founder behind one of our favorite holistic beauty brands, about her sleep philosophy and the products she turns to to make the most of her non-waking hours.

    VIOLET GREY: How does sleep impact general bodily health?

    SUSANNE KAUFMANN: At Susanne Kaufmann we see beauty holistically––the belief that true beauty is based on inner balance, health, and well-being. Getting plenty of sleep is vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When we sleep, our body regenerates, processes stress, and fights off illness. Overall, good sleep helps to improve our brain performance, mood, and health.

    VG: How does sleep impact appearance?

    SK: When asleep, your body goes into ‘repair and replenish’ mode. A lack of sleep can cause dark circles under the eye area, fine lines and wrinkles, and puffiness in the face due to the reduced flow of blood in the skin.

    VG: What are the biggest factors in sleep disruption?

    SK: Stress, caffeine, and alcohol and/or food consumption before bed are big sleep disruptors. Electronic devices can also disrupt sleep. It’s important to find a wind-down routine that works for you and avoid using digital devices at least an hour before bed to promote a good night's sleep.

    VG: What should people avoid to ensure better, more quality sleep?

    SK: Keep all electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and televisions outside of the bedroom. If you do not have elsewhere to put them, make sure they are switched off to avoid electromagnetic waves disturbing your sleep. I also recommend eating lighter meals in the evening for smoother digestion, helping to avoid discomfort while you sleep. Also, if you’ve had a bad night of sleep, be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your body and skin hydrated.
